The Service Act Amendment Bills on Tuesday were approved by the majority vote in the National Assembly for the extension of the tenure of the heads of the three armed forces.
The National Assembly session was chaired by Speaker Asad Qaiser. Chairman Defense Committee Amjad Ali Khan presented the report of the standing committee on the Army Act Amendment Bill in the House. On the direction of the Speaker, Defense Minister Pervez Khattak presented separate amendments to the Army Act, the Air Force Act and the Navy Ordinance. The House ratified the Legislature on military heads separately. PTI and its allies MQM, PML-Q and BAP, the opposition parties Muslim League-N and the PPP also participated in the approval of the bill. PPP withdrew its recommondations for amendments to the bill on the request of Pervaiz Khatak. Naveed Qamar said that in order to avoid separating ourselves, we withdraw the amendments, we decided on the new situation in the country and the region that the amendments will not be insisted upon. Members of the JUI-F, the Jamaat-e-Islami and the Pashtun Protection Movement walked out of the bill in protest and chanted slogans. Asad Qaiser adjourned the National Assembly meeting until 4 pm tomorrow after the bills were approved. Before the National Assembly meeting, separate meetings of the PTI and the PML-N parliamentary party were held. The PML-N decided the unconditional support of the bill. The meeting of the PTI's parliamentary party was chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan and the PTI's parliamentary session rejected all amendments to the PPP. The Supreme Court on November 26 suspended the 3-year extension of Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa. On November 28, the Supreme Court gave General Qamar Javed Bajwa a 6-month conditional extension and ordered Parliament to legislate on extension of the post of Army Chief in six months.
